Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti, which in the Maasai language means “never ending plains,” holds an immense variety and volume of wildlife. The park is famous for its yearly Great Migration when almost 1.5 million wildebeest travel around the Serengeti plains in search of pasture and water. But even without the migration, the Serengeti is still one of the best parks in Africa to visit with incredible game viewing opportunities throughout the year. There are healthy numbers of predators including lion, cheetah, leopard, and hyenas and great herds of buffalo, smaller groups of elephant and giraffe, in addition to many, many other animals. The landscape is impressive with vast views of the savanna interspersed with Acacia trees and interesting rocky outcroppings called Kjopes. Even though the Serengeti is classified as a national park with boundaries - its liberating sense of space ensures a true wilderness experience.
Best time to go: Although wildlife is easier to spot in the dry season (June to October), the Serengeti offers good wildlife viewing throughout the year, due to the short grasses.
