About Us

My name is Jay (I’m on the far right) and am the founder of Tarakwai Safaris. I grew up in Tanzania and while I have studied and lived abroad, my connection to this country has never left. My favourite part has always been seeing how pastoralists like the Maasai - to the extent they can - live so connected to nature. On my last trip back to Tanzania, I made the decision to start Tarakwai; a company that highlights the interconnectedness of life and shares that connection with the traveller.

In addition to the wildlife encounters from our traditional game drives, we strive to integrate some degree of walking on our safaris. The sense of freedom and exhilaration from exploring a region on foot is a unique experience. On bush walks, you also have the chance to connect with the people and tribes of the area, and learn much more about the surrounding ecosystem.

What is Tarakwai?

Tarakwai, or Oltarakwai, is the Maasai name for the Juniper tree. Many cultures all over the world have held Juniper in high regard for its ability to purify people and places. The Maasai value it for rituals where smoke from the burning Oltarakwai wood is used to bless individuals undergoing certain rites of passage. We at Tarakwai appreciate traditions where the natural world is held sacred; a spirit we try to embody in our safaris.
