Community and Conservation

Community Support

Tarakwai currently supports Mkuru Eco-Tented Camps with their efforts to create sustainable livelihood options for the people of Mkuru. This involves Tarakwai helping with marketing of the camp and supporting the expansion of the Maasai women’s jewelry and men’s leather making cooperatives.

Eco-friendly Lodges

We place a high importance on, and actively seek out lodges that strive to lessen their ecological footprint - whether through the use of solar power energy, locally-sourced and manufactured structures, to the recycling of water. We include these lodges as often as we can in our itineraries.

Living Wages

We value our guides very highly. All our guides are provided with a wage that goes above industry standards. We understand their work depends on the volume of tours, which can be erratic. To offset some of this variability, we do our best to not only provide fair wages, but also training opportunities whenever they arise.

Reducing Plastic

We are continually exploring solutions to lessen the excessive use of plastics used by lodges for packing safari lunches and distributing water. We have already incorporated a number of alternatives, including providing our guests with steel water thermos bottles and reusable food containers to be returned at the end of their safari.

Walking safaris

Our itineraries include many days where you will be walking. This means much more time connecting to the essence of Tanzania, while producing less CO2 emission.

Community Based Tourism

Many of our safari destinations are in Wildlife Management Areas, which is community owned land. People here earn direct income from employment in the tourism sector and the community as a whole earns a percentage of revenue from accommodation and entrance fees that visitors pay.

Supporting the Local Economy

On safari, especially in between destinations, we enjoy visiting local independent food and souvenir vendors. We choose this option because it provides the vendors a much needed income and for the traveller, a more unique and interesting experience.
